Selected Poems

Stuttered PLEAS escaping from my lanky teenaged boy with bended KNEES after watching the heart-wrenching movie Marley & ME, a story of a rambunctious golden dog's life JOURNEY with his unsuspecting golden FAMILY.  My boy lays curled like a newborn baBY still in the womb.
 

The denim blue carpet is soaked with RIVERS, salty and massive like crashing waves. His body SHIVERS, his voice QUIVERS, his sobs are DELIVERED with an intensity as big as the love in his heart for Jack.
 

Jack, a triple sweet licorice, marshmallow, honey threat of black, white, and BROWN. He BOUNDS around, up and over, and finally settles DOWN next to his boy.
 

I watch as tears textured like sweet green peas RACE down my FACE TRACING the crevices that are beginning to define my AGE.
 

"I don't want him to die."
 

"It's many many years AWAY" I softly promise and then close my eyes and silently PRAY as I feel the bumps OVERLAY his skin. The vet insists they are OKAY...until they are not.

 Jack is SIX, our beagle and Jack Russell MIX. He still has so many TRICKS. Joey's tongue FUMBLES and STUMBLES, "I can tell he's slower". I slip to the FLOOR and wrap my arms around his 5 foot 8 inch terrified CORE shaking with the hypothermia of FEAR and surrounded by the mist of our merged TEARS as mine drop onto his neck. The song from the 60s show "The Courtship of Eddie's Father" ricochets between my EARS.
 

"People let me tell you 'bout my best friend. He's a warm-hearted person who'll love me till the end. Yes he's my best friend."
